The Middle Eastern-influenced form of this long-necked vase is extremely simple by Zsolnay's usually exuberant standards. However, the decoration has all the hallmarks of the Hungarian firm's colorful approach. An overall blue-green iridescent glaze is vertically striped with gold-glazed areas of tiny raised flower petals. Between the verticals, undulating golden flames, criss-crossed by streams of red flower petals, rise mysteriously to the rim. Islamic influence in Hungary was especially strong in the 16th century when the region was part of the Ottoman Empire and re-emerged at various times in the nation's history. This piece may represent the nationalistic impulses that influenced designers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Marks: Zsolnay Pécs and Zsolnay's five steeple logo stamped in ink on the base; Zsolnay Pécs 5343 2 M are stamped into the clay on the base.
