Description

This long-necked vase is distinguished both by itssang de boeuf glaze and the application of four buttress handles that begin at the vessel's waist with foo dog heads and terminate on the neck with stylized horns. The secret formula for the Chinese glaze was avidly sought by Western potters through trial and error. This is an early example of success. Foo dogs, which resemble lions, are considered guardians. Overall, this object pays tribute to an earlier culture that in the late 19th century was still considered rather mysterious.
