Description

This charming ceramic inkwell depicts a nude female with an adoring expression, embracing an ink receptacle in the somewhat phallic form of a gourd. Vegetal forms and allegorical females, both beloved of Art Nouveau artists, are combined here in a compelling functional object. Amusingly erotic, it must have been a successful conversation piece on the desk of an urbane gentleman. Marks: stamped artist's cipher, 71
