A naturalistic tree trunk with a high relief sculpture of the Biblical Eve recalls depictions of the damned on medieval architecture. The serpent, forming a Nouveau whiplash line around the trunk, reminds us that the ancient and modern are not irreconcilable. Loss of innocence and feelings of despondency, popular themes among Symbolists and ceramic artists, were often depicted through references to mythological, allegorical, historical, and fictional individuals. Marks: inscribed BENX no 1.
