Foreword by Bernard Dejonghe

A thorough and extensively illustrated monograph on Émile Decoeur, this volume is a vital resource for all Decoeur collectors and an excellent addition to the libraries of all ceramics fanciers. The authors, a gallerist who specializes in Art Deco, and an art historian with a wide range of interests, closely examine the French ceramist's career from his apprenticeship with Edmond Lachenal to the end of his life. Their sources include documents that have not previously been available.

Living from 1876 to 1953, active during more than 50 years, Emile Decoeur is a major figure of 20th century French ceramics. First known for works in the organic style of the Art Nouveau era, he became famous for his pared down aesthetic of Art Deco period. While following this transition, the authors consider matters of artistic milieu, technique, marketing and patronage. Decoeur's concern with harmony between shape, material and décor is beautifully illustrated with color photographs of examples from many collections including the collection of the Jason Jacques Gallery. Footnotes, reproductions of archival documents, an index, timeline and glossary add substantial value to this scholarly but accessible work. 4528
