Far Eastern carvings in stone, jade, and glass exerted a powerful influence on French decorative artists during the last third of the nineteenth century. Carved glass from this period was typically decorated with botanical or zoomorphic motifs, whereas the décor on this bowl is allusive rather than representational. The trailing glaze on the shoulder brings to mind the Chinese motif known as "dragon among clouds," yet it remains resolutely abstract. Marks: Lachenal ; ED monogram [painted]
