Traditional in form, this charming vase is hand-painted with stylized flowers, stems, and buds that recall embroidered Persian textiles. The surface, luster glazed over a golden pearlized ground, resembles those of ancient, iridized ceramics. A miniature egg and dart border at the rim is a reference to antiquity. While a prisoner in Hungary during WorldWar I, Pietro Melandri became familiar with Vienna Secession ceramics and created his first pieces. In 9 8, after returning to Italy, he established the ceramics atelier where this nostalgic vase was formed and fired. Marks: Painted artist's initials and cipher, Faenza, made in Italy
