Description

A crab with large, threatening claws and opalescent eyes is the menacing focal point on the lid of this metal-clad wooden box. Abstract linear and stippled designs on the front, back, and sides, are accented with jewel-like cabochon stones. Daguet created this low relief design with a combination of techniques, including repousee, chasing, stamping and stippling. Even the tiny finishing nails employed to attach metal to wood are used to ornamental advantage. They are strategically placed to become part of the all-over design. Alfred Daguet fabricated his unique objects in the studio above Sigfried Bing's Maison L'Art Nouveau in Paris.
