In its realistic leaf-and-nut decoration and forest brown color scheme, Diffloth's Chestnut Leaves has an affinity for the rustic branch of the Arts and Crafts Movement tree but, given its national origin, seems more at home in the category of Art Nouveau. The artist has created a beautifully idealized allover pattern of graceful leaves, branches and nuts upon a brown ground. It appears that the pattern was initially created with a wax resist process. The larger resulting unglazed areas were then glazed in a manner that created spontaneous yet subtle black, orange, and gold speckles. A transparent top glaze unites the layers.
