
The subject of this centerpiece may be Japonist in origin, yet it also evokes the serpentine dolphins that adorn Baroque architecture, especially fountains. Lachenal chose to fabricate the piece from stoneware, which enabled him to decorate it with a high-temperature glaze that spills over the rim like watery foam.
