Dresser demonstrates his mastery of the Aesthetic style by combining elements of Indian, Persian, and Gothic design on the surface of this stunning potpourri container. The décor is a complex composition of flowers, arches, intertwined lines, and bands of stlyzed figures rendered in a lush color scheme of gold, pink, green, and blue. The lid is pierced in two concentric circles (the outer one composed of twelve holes, the inner of six) to allow the spicy contents to perfume the air. The Thomas Goode paper label and lack of other markings suggest that Thomas Goode, an elite emporium established in 1827 and now holding three royal warrants, commissioned the design and manufacture of this piece.
