A fine example of Delaherche's early stoneware, this vase is especially distinctive for its combination of scrolling floral imagery—reminiscent of medieval manuscript marginalia— and the running glazes of Japan. At the time that this example was made, the artist had been working independently for three years in the studio on rue Blomet (in the Vaugirard section of Paris) that Ernest Chaplet had once operated for Haviland. Often using clay that he brought in from the Beauvais region, Delaherche concentrated on simple forms flowing glazes.
