Outstanding in simplicity of form and decoration, this sleek sapphire-blue vase is set like a gem with golden rings at the rim, neck, and base. Sèvres was known for its enormously varied forms, clay types, and glazes. The factory seems to have made everything possible in ceramics, from fireplaces and fountains to ashtrays and candlesticks. Many of its finest works were commissioned by the State and went directly to State offices and official residences, where they remain. This explains the relative scarcity of Sèvres Art Nouveau ceramics on the market. Marks: manufacturer's cipher; S93.
