This Chinese-inspired vase is clad in a deceptively simple azure glaze with undertones of blood red and honey brown. It is a fine example of Emile Decouer's mature style. Decouer began his career as an apprentice to Edmond Lachenal, creating sculptural vases in the Art Nouveau idiom of his master. In around 1906-07 he began to produce symmetrical, wheel-thrown forms with simple profiles and carefully proportioned volumes.
