Description

Known as the Pagoda, the Colenbrander form used for both of these vases suggests the exotic architecture of the Far East. This image illustrates the use of the same form for two décors. While the exuberant surface design of stylized carnations on Anjelier seems related to scientific botanical drawings, outlines and areas of color have a painterly quality that communicates the action of the artist’s brush. The exceedingly rare Feathers décor is composed of a non-repeating peacock feather. While Colenbrander’s reliance on Indonesian models is disputed, this design bears a closer resemblance to wax resist batik design than his other work. The piece is further distinguished by the absence of the black outlines that are nearly ubiquitous in Colenbrander’s work.
